10 Highest Paying Jobs You Can Do at Home
Learn these top 10 skills where freelancers, and self-employed people are earning the most money working in the comfort of their own home.
Leaving aside the fulfillment that comes with a job and looking only at how much you can get paid, let take a look at what are the highest paying jobs. We approached our research on two fronts:
- What is the highest paid worker by what they can charge per hour?
- What are the types of jobs that are online posting boards like UpWork.com or Fiverr.com and who are earning the most money?
What’s Your Hourly Rate?
In this research, we wanted to find any type of job that is highly specialized and is highest paid first. Here we use some resources that have been compiled by careerinfonet.org, the top 20 include:
- Internists, Medical (I believe)
- Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
- Oral Surgeons
- General Surgeons
- Family Doctors
- Nurse Anesthetists
- Dentists, General (this is the 3rd time, teeth have come up)
- Architectural and Engineering Managers
- Computer and Information Systems Managers
- Petroleum Engineers
- Marketing Managers
- Air Traffic Controllers
So, that rounds out the top 20. I looked at the next 20 and honestly they all look the same, which they are usually professionals for health care and medical-related or some other highly specialized skill.
Perhaps the one thing that’s reassuring is that there are all sorts of the need for good managers and managing people and projects.
So, the top 8, earn more than 90 bucks a hour and when you get to the 20th person (Air Traffic Controller), one earns about 60 bucks an hour.
But, if you look at the top 20 jobs, most of these are not work-at-home affairs. You can’t operate on a patient at home, for example, though that goes without saying really. So of the top 10, the ones that really allow you to work from home or be a location-independent worker is CEO and Computer and Information Systems Managers.
But that’s the “Employer-Employee” work where traditional work resides. We pride ourselves on TheFreelancer.co to write about online work, how to make money at home and the jobs of the future. For that, we need to do a bit more search into emerging freelancing portals.
The New Economy
Freelancing, self-employment, independent contractors are just a few words we use to define who the people who know work in this gig economy are. The medium in which people find work and clients find people to do them have moved from Craiglist (though there are still some people who post there still) to freelancing marketplaces like Fiverr. Each of these have their own merits and we scoured those networks to compile a list of highest paying jobs for freelancers.
Here’s the list in no particular order (because it is highly dependent on each freelancer)
- Online Marketers or SEO Specialists
- Voice Actors
- Programmers (particularly for mobile, but web too)
- User Interface, User Experience (UX) Designers
- Graphic Designers
Interestingly enough, almost all of these is work you can do from home and likely isn’t a coincidence. All these jobs have been popularized by and driven by a need for building an online business, whether it’s to build a website, create a software or building digital solutions.
Keep in mind that the “plumbing” and the “plumbers” that work on the world wide web are the highest paying jobs AND the skills needed today that can be done remotely and at home.
